Over the past 13 years I have been managing the Greenbank RSL/Brisbane Broncos Community Development

Program, a community based program supporting the wider Logan district. The Greenbank RSL has now

contributed in excess of $1.2 million dollars and it is through this program that we have been able to achieve

some outstanding initiatives for the local community.

Each year the program has contact with approximately 10,000 youth, 40 schools, 12 local sporting clubs and a

range of varying charitable organisations. The local community is the focal point of the Greenbank RSL’s

commitment and there are  many wonderful areas in which this program support, these include; transport

subsidies for schools to play sport, funding of uniforms, equipment, referees, sports medicine, courses, healthy

lifestyle programs, life skill programs, fundraising prizes, gifts and awards.

The Greenbank RSL and this Community Program have driven growth in local sporting clubs, with most achieving

in excess of 110% growth over the last 10 years. An example of this is Waterford JRL, in 2003 this club had 138

registered players,   in 2012 this number grew to 453. This is the result of many factors but certainly this

program, its link to a powerful brand such as the Broncos and its active involvement in the local schools/community

has played key role in driving this growth.

Greenbank and Logan districts have seen a significant rise in the numbers of schools participating in rugby league.

Beaudesert district had no schoolboy Rugby League Competition, so in 2005 we started the

“Greenbank RSL/Broncos Kingfisher Challenge”, schools from the district participated in a 5 week Competition, with

over 400 participants in netball and rugby league.

The success of this program is only possible with financial support and as the person who has driven this program

for more than 12 years, I would like to personally thank the Greenbank RSL and  Brisbane Broncos for their ongoing

commitment. Also, several key local businesses that have been loyal supporters of this program. Gold Sponsors,

Zupps Browns Plains, led by dealer principle Paul Wooley, Mark Townend, CEO of RSPCA QLD and our Bronze

Sponsor, Scott Northfield, Branch Manager of Bendigo Bank Browns Plains.

JimboombaThunder junior rugby league players got the chance to learn from a legend of the game on Thursday

when Mick Hancock dropped into training. The former Australian, Queensland and Broncos player spent time

with the club's under 16s, 15s and 12s. He put the players through several defensive drills and shared tips for

being mentally prepared for games. After training, Hancock took time to sign balls and jerseys not only for the

players but also some star struck parents.

Max is a 7 year old boy with cerebral palsy which leaves him with no independent gross motor skills or language.

Max attends main stream school in Grade 3 and lives and breathes the NRL and especially the Brisbane Broncos.

His ambitions switch between being a future Broncos player or an NRL coach. The Brisbane Broncos recently

held a football clinic to which Max was able to attend. The Broncos openly embraced Max’s attendance and

included him in all the drills. Michael Hancock was exceptional with Max treating  Max as an equal with the other

boys and empowering Max to be the best he could be. Max was absolutely thrilled with the chance to be a

“Brisbane Bronco in training”. As a parent it was wonderful for Max to be welcomed and given a go in a

mainstream sporting activity. What really touched us was when Michael said “it was our privilege to have Max

attend today and we look forward to seeing him again next year”.
